Kirchner Drei Akte im Walde Es ist ein besonders beeindruckendes, ku- bistisch und picassoesk aufgefasstes Blatt, das das traditionelle Thema in einer dunkel sinnlichen Waldfarbigkeit mit strahlend gel- ber Lichtinsel wiedergibt. Der Raum wird wie bei Rembrandt als Umgebung der Lichtinsel bestimmt. Doch Kirchner holt ihn durch die Planimetrie der Farbflächen wieder in die Flä- che zurück. Die Gestaltung fasst große Farbflä- chen quasi autonom auf, sodass Flächenrand und Gegenstandskontur nicht zusammen- fallen, was für Spannung und Dynamik sorgt. Der Probedruck in Grün-Gelb belegt das deut- lich. Kirchner schafft ein Bild, kein Abbild. Die Stimmung erscheint wichtiger als das Motiv. Three Nudes in the Forest It is an especially impressive, Cubist and Picasso- esque designed sheet of paper that reproduces this traditional theme in darkly sensual forest colors with a gleaming yellow isle of light. Space, as with Rembrandt, becomes the environs around this island of light. But Kirchner, via planimetrics, brings the color areas back to the flat plane. The composition takes up large areas of color quasi autonomously so that the area’s edge and the ob- ject’s contour do not coincide, which is what trig- gers the tension and dynamism. The test print in green-yellow is clear proof of this. Kirchner has created an image, not a copy, and the atmosphere appears more significant than the motif.
