Sagenhaft! 40 Jahre Samuelis Baumgarte Galerie

Spring Houses and surrounding landscape - the spring lies in the colors. The blue of the sky is repeat- ed in the buildings, their fawn and purple in the landscape. This leads to an integrated picture, hovering between figuration and abstraction, with a kind of all-over structure. But there are also classical elements of composition, like the row of specks at the edges, forming a visual bracket de- fining the ensemble as a protected location. Volcanic landscape and cape Eduard Bargheer, together with Werner Gilles and Edvard Frank, was one of the artists who wanted to survive the Third Reich artistically by a return to the Mediterranean. In his style Bargheer was also at times expressive and understood the pic- ture plane as being cubist. Like in the “Volcanic landscape and cape” he gave the entire picture an occasional dynamically moved allover structure, whose brash penetration addressed the violence of nature’s forces that had once formed the land- scape.
