Seine Werke zeichnen sich durch eine leuchtende, frische Farbigkeit aus. Es gibt zwei Haupttypen seiner Bilder: einmal die gänzlich geschlosse- nen, hermetischen All-over-Bilder und dann die Werke mit praktisch leerer Mitte, die die Peripherie als Bildmotiv generieren. Beide Ar- ten von Bildern haben einen stark meditativen Charakter, machen dem Betrachter auch seine Wahrnehmungsaktivität bewusst. Untitled (in Bern) Sam Francis is one of the foremost representa- tives of tachisme and Action Painting. His works are characterized by fresh and luminous coloring. There are two main types of his paintings:One, the completely closed-off hermetic “allover” paint- ings and, two, the works with a practically empty center that generate the perphery as the picture’s motif. Both types have a strongly meditative char- acter, but also make the viewer conscious of his own act of perception.
