Born 1924 in San Sebastián, Spain. In 1943 Chillida begins to study architecture and very soon breaks it off. In 1947 Eduardo Chillida enrolls in the private art academy in Madrid’s “Circulo de Bellas Artas” and be- gins to work mostly in plaster and clay. In 1949, dur- ing a stay in Paris, begins working with iron sculpture. In Spanish Hernani he produces his 1950 abstract sculpture “Ilarik”, in which he very early clarifies his concept of three-dimensional art that foregrounds space. There are also similar correspondences to be found in his graphic work. The renowned sculptor and graphic artist participates in many international exhibitions as well as in several documenta shows and biennials. In 1980 the Guggenheim Museum dedicates a retrospective to him in New York. With his work Chillida is considered the most important sculptor who creates his pieces in a concrete style. Eli Cortinas (*1976) wird 1976 in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria/Spanien, ge- boren. Sie studiert an der Kunsthochschule für Medi- en in Köln und dem European Film College in Ebeltoft, Dänemark. Ein wesentlicher Teil ihrer Arbeit ist ge- kennzeichnet durch einen individuellen Filmschnitt. Durch das Auslassen ganzer Passagen oder der ste- tigen Wiederholung kurzer Sequenzen erreicht sie eine Neudefinition bestehenden Filmmaterials. Der dadurch verdichtete und häufig umgelenkte Blick des Betrachters sieht das Werk nun abgekoppelt vom Ursprung als für sich allein bestehendes Kunstwerk. Cortinas irritiert durch diese Verdichtung, schafft eine eigene Ästhetik und thematisiert neue Felder. Auch in eigenen Produktionen schafft es die Künstle- rin, den Betrachter gezielt mit Aspekten der Wirklich- keit zu konfrontieren und den Blick zu schärfen. Sie versteht den Filmschnitt als „Akt des Schreibens“, mit dem sie den Erzählfluss unterbricht oder neu konst- ruiert. Derselbe verstörende, durch Neudefinition ge- kennzeichnete Umgang mit Realität und Objekt findet sich auch im übrigen Oeuvre von Collagen bis hin zur Objektkunst wieder. Wesentliche Ausstellungen ihrer Werke finden u.a. im Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, der Kunsthalle Düsseldorf und dem Centre Pompidou, Pa- ris, statt. Eli Cortinas lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. An es- sential part of her work is marked by an individualist film editing. By omitting whole passages or the steady repetition of short sequences, she achieves a new definition of found film material. The thus compacted and often redirected view of the spectator decouples the work from its origin to make it an artwork that stands for its self alone. The compression is provoca- tive, produces its own aesthetic and thematizes new fields. Also in her productions Eli Cortinas manages to very deliberately confront the viewer with aspects of reality and to sharpen his or her (in)sight. She un- derstands film editing as an “act of writing”, in that she interrupts or reconstructs the narrative flow. The same disconcerting treatment of reality and object marked by new-definition is also found with the rest of her oeuvre from collage to object art. Essential exhibi- tions of her works took place at the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and Centre Pom- pidou in Paris, among others. Eli Cortinas lives and works in Berlin. Tony Cragg (*1949) wird 1949 in Liverpool geboren. Er nimmt ein Studium am Gloucestershires College of Art and Design auf und besucht anschließend die Malklasse der Wimble- don School of Art, bevor er 1973 an das Royal College of Art in London wechselt. Seine Bekanntschaft mit Konzeptkünstler Richard Long beeinflusst sein Werk in dieser Phase. 1976 nimmt er einen Lehrauftrag an der École des Beaux-Arts in Metz an. Ein Jahr später zieht er nach Wuppertal, wo auch heute noch sein Wohnsitz ist. In den 1980er-Jahren ist Cragg auf vie- len bedeutenden internationalen Ausstellungen wie z.B. auf der documenta VII und VIII in Kassel und auf fünf Biennalen in Venedig, Sao Paulo und Sydney ver- treten. Mitte der 1980er-Jahre werden seine Objekte der Plastikära durch raumgreifende Bronzeplastiken ersetzt. Seit Ende der 1980er-Jahre widmet sich Tony Cragg auch der Zeichnung. Ab 1979 lehrt er an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, seit 1988 als Professor,
