149 1923 Ruth Baumgarte is born in Coburg. Originating from an old theater family, she grows up in Berlin 1946 After studying graphic art and painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste – partly in a master class – Ruth Baumgarte moves from war-torn Berlin to Bielefeld and there builds an existence as a self- employed painter and graphic artist. 1952 She supplies diverse publishing companies and newspapers with illustrations for books and publications. First exhibitions nationally and internationally. Marries the industrialist Hans Baumgarte. Many encounters and friendly associations with known artists and personalities from culture, politics and the business community. Many international journeys to southern Europe, Africa, Asia and the U.S. 1975 Ruth Baumgarte founds the gallery “Das Fenster”, the direct predecessor to the later Samuelis Baumgarte Galerie in Bielefeld. 1986 Ruth Baumgarte and her son Alexander together found the Samuelis Baumgarte Galerie in Breite Strasse 3-7 in Bielefeld’s center. 1988 The Samuelis Baumgarte Galerie relocates to Am Bach 1b in the immediate vicinity of its former rooms. 1991 Alexander Baumgarte becomes sole owner. The gallery moves once again and occupies three floors in the immediate vicinity of the Old Market in Obernstrasse 28. Exhibitions with widely recognized artists: Frank Stella, Joseph Beuys, Marino Marini, Georg Baselitz, Sam Francis, Louise Nevelson and many others. since 1991 Member in the Federal Organization of Galleries and Art Dealers since 1992 The gallery is regularly represented at internationally well-regarded art fairs, for instance Art Cologne, FIAC Paris or the Arte Fiera Bologna. 2005 Move to the present room in the distinctive former headquarters of the Dresdner Bank at Niederwall 10, in prominent proximity to the Rathaus, city theater and the old marketplace.
