Marini stu- diert ab 1917 Malerei und Bildhauerei an der Akade- mie der Künste in Florenz und übernimmt 1929 eine Dozentur an der Kunstschule der Villa Reale in Monza bei Mailand, die er bis 1940 innehat. Die hochreflektierte Kunst Mayers ist auch geprägt von seiner Zeit bei den Kölner Wilden ab den 1980er- Jahre um Künstlerpersönlichkeiten wie Cosima von Bonin, Merlin Carpenter, Martin Kippenberger und Jutta Koether. Auch sind seine Werke Ausdruck einer ständigen politischen und sozialen Auseinanderset- zung. Nach einer Steinmetz- lehre studiert Metzkes von 1949 bis 1953 Malerei an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden. Von 1955 bis 1958 ist er Meisterschüler bei Otto Nagel an der Akademie der Künste in Berlin.
