68 Willy Brandt und Günter Guillaume Wenn Zeitgeschichte zur Kunst wird, genau- er gesagt Bilder von Szenen der Zeitgeschich- te, ist das nicht nur die Fortführung der vor- nehmen Gattung der Historienmalerei, son- dern gehört auch in einen neuen Kunstzusam- menhang, der, ganz aktuell und typisch für die conditio humana unserer Zeit, widerspiegelt, was der Betrachter, der Kunstinteressierte von der Kunst heute einfordert: Erklärungsmuster für eine an Absurditätsgraden zulegende Welt. Es werden vielfach wieder in zeitgenössischer und zeitgemäßer Form Antworten gesucht, wie man sie früher in den Bildern der Alten Meister fand. Der Unterschied ist, dass in vergangenen Zeiten die Lösung vorgefertigt war („Heilsge- schehen“), sich heute aber aus den Umstän- den und Konstellationen aufbaut. Sie ist auch personengebunden: War früher das Bild eines Herrschers mehr das Bild des Herrschertums, stehen jetzt die Interaktionen der Protagonis- ten modellhaft für Erklärungen ein, Geschich- te wird Personengeschichte. Der „Universal Soldier“, der Politiker, der handelnde Mensch, bekommt seine Impulse nicht von übergeord- neten Kräften, sondern agiert aus sich heraus, wenn auch im Kontext von Geschichte. Ein monumentaler Maßstab unterstreicht die uni- verselle Bedeutung der Einzelhandlung. Willy Brandt and Günter Guillaume When current events become art, or more pre- cisely, pictures of current events, it is not only a continuation of the distinguished genre of history painting, but also belongs to a new art associa- tion, which, quite currently and typically for the conditio humana of our time, reflects what the viewer and the art fan demands of art today: ex- planatory blueprints for a world increasing in its degree of absurdity. Solutions in a contemporary and up-to-date form are being again sought that one used to find in the pictures of old masters. The difference is that in bygone days the solution was prefabricated (salvation) that today is built on present circumstances and constellations. It is also now personalized. If before the image of a sovereign was more that of sovereignty, today the interactions of the protagonists are a model for explanations; history is the history of persons. The “universal soldier”, the politician, the activist get their impulses not from superior powers but act on their own, if also in the context of history. A monumental yardstick underscores the universal significance of individual acts. Thomas Kilpper
