Reflection
The Samuelis Baumgarte Gallery at Munich Highlights 2025
October 16–19, 2025 | Munich Residenz | Booth B11 & Booth B4
With Reflection, the Samuelis Baumgarte Gallery in Bielefeld celebrates its premiere at Munich Highlights, unfolding a curatorial concept that does not separate history and the present, but rather allows them to be experienced as a living unity. Two presentations opposite each other in the rooms of the Munich Residenz form a dramatic overall staging: the masterpieces and rediscoveries of the Weimar Republic at booth B11 and the “virtual studio” of Feodora Hohenlohe (1952) at booth B4.
Stand B11 – Masterpieces of the Weimar Republic
The anniversary exhibition “50 Years of Samuelis Baumgarte Gallery” is dedicated to the period between 1918 and 1933, which ranks among the most radical and productive moments in art history. Works by Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Paul Klee, Käthe Kollwitz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Alexej von Jawlensky, Max Liebermann, Christian Schad, Kurt Schwitters, and Rudolf Schlichter come together to form a panorama ranging from expressive passion to the precise sobriety of New Objectivity.
Alongside canonical icons are extraordinary rediscoveries: for example, the powerful and expressive works of Fritz Schaefler (1897–1991), who was marginalized as a proscribed artist in the 1930s and is now regaining importance with his exciting combination of Expressionism and New Objectivity; the pointed, New Objectivity images of Werner Hauk, a stylistically independent chronicler of his time who captured the reality of the interwar years with keen powers of observation; and the rarely shown compositions of William Wauer (1866–1962), a pioneer of German avant-garde film and an innovative sculptor whose multifaceted work spanning sculpture, painting, and cinema embodies the aesthetic experiments of modernism.
It is precisely these rediscoveries that give the presentation its special appeal: they open up new perspectives on the diversity of Weimar art and illustrate the breadth of this era – from internationally celebrated icons to artistic personalities who are now coming to light with renewed intensity.
Stand B4 – Feodora Hohenlohe's studio
In the “virtual illusionistic studio” at Stand B4, Feodora Hohenlohe offers a glimpse into her painterly world. Her still lifes, flower paintings, and figurative scenes embody the formal clarity and austerity of the 1920s – yet at the same time she transforms them into a poetically imbued present. With glass-like transparency, mysterious light, and a meditative creative process, she elevates the everyday to timeless treasures. Thus, the attitude of New Objectivity lives on in her painting, expanded by a personal, contemporary sensibility.
A unity – the past reflected in the present
The two presentations do not stand in opposition to each other; they mirror each other. The view of the masterpieces of the Weimar Republic is echoed in Feodora Hohenlohe's works – and vice versa. What they have in common is their focus on the essential, the precision of their gaze, and the clarity of their form. Reflection shows how the artistic language of the 1920s continues, transforms, and shines anew in the present.
With this exhibition, the Samuelis Baumgarte Gallery is sending a message: about the vitality of art-historical tradition, about the sensual power of painting, and about the magic that arises when past and present meet in the mirror of art.
