Liberation from Earth - Alexander Calder | Joan Miró 16. October 2022 - 28. January 2023

About the exhibition

Samuelis Baumgarte Galerie, Bielefeld, Germany, presents an extensive show of works by world-renowned artists Alexander Calder and Joan Miró from October 16, 2022 to January 28, 2023. Entitled "Liberation from Earth", the more than 50 high-profile works spanning 6 decades by the artists interact with each other in their abstraction. All works have been carefully assembled from private collections worldwide. Alexander Calder and Joan Miró's friendly relationship began in 1928 in the Catalan painter's Paris studio. Both artists found common ground in their surrealist style along the way, but also energetic visual challenges that included kinetics in Calder's work and Cubism and Dadaism in Miró's.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at 11 am with an introduction by Dr. Gabriele Himmelmann, art historian, Hamburg. A catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition.

The poetic charm of their works, which in the case of Alexander Calder in particular sought to find its way into space and sculptural interaction with people, is evident, for example, in the towering sculpture Crag with White Flower and White Discs, 1974, which depicts an artistic universal language that Joan Miró complements in many ways through his pictorial abstraction. The important canvas Tête, 1974 by Miró exemplifies how both artists inspired each other.

The compilation of the exhibition explores the virtuoso use of weightless formal language in the oeuvre of both artists, who found a common focus in the processing of movement, dynamics and in the detachment from the earthly. The mobile The Red Crescent, 1969 is another highlight. We invite you to experience this art-historically formative dialogue in our gallery. In the corresponding show of works, you can trace the exhibition history rich in worldwide tradition and experience a new space of imagination with the outstanding works of both artists, including mobiles, stabiles as well as works on paper and canvas.
