Eli Cortiñas
Biography
Eli Cortiñas was born in 1976 in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria/Spain. She studies at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and the European Film College Ebeltoft, Denmark. A significant part of her work is characterized by individual film editing. By leaving out entire passages or constantly repeating short sequences, she achieves a new definition of existing film material. The viewer's view, which is thus condensed and often redirected, now sees the work, disconnected from its origin, as a work of art that exists on its own. It is irritating through this condensation, creates its own aesthetic and addresses new fields. In his own productions, Eli Cortiñas also manages to specifically confront the viewer with aspects of reality and sharpen their perspective. She sees film editing as an “act of writing” with which she interrupts or re-constructs the flow of the narrative. The same disturbing approach to reality and objects, characterized by redefinition, can also be found in the rest of his oeuvre, from collages to object art.
