About the exhibition
Astrid Lowack (born in 1969) has been dedicated to photography for almost a decade. The works of this Bamberg-born artist are usually created in nature and deal with the interplay of those elements that she requires for “transcendental” effects beyond conventional sensory experiences: light and shade, water and movement. The viewer can hardly escape the impact of her works – they are strongly abstracted photographs which look like paintings at first glance and glow with intense colours. They neither show concrete image motifs nor are they entirely abstract; they are taken in nature but do not portray it; they are snapshots and yet timeless and universal. The play with reality and the unreal, the visualisation of the conscious and unconscious, the presentation of appearance and being inspires Astrid Lowack to constantly achieve new perspectives – and takes the viewer into their own worlds of memory and dream. The artist lives and works near Amsterdam.
