About the exhibition
At the beginning of the new art season, the Samuelis Baumgarte Galerie is pleased to present you the extensive solo exhibition "Christian Awe - color and vibes". With 26 selected works, we are showing for the first time an exciting excerpt from the oeuvre of the well-known contemporary artist Christian Awe from September 5 to October 23, 2021.
The vernissage of the exhibition "Christian Awe - color and vibes" will take place on Sunday, September 5th, 2021 at 5 p.m. with an introduction by Jörg Mascherrek, M.A., art historian and an artist talk with Christian Awe. Registration for the vernissage is required. A color catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition.
The works of the artist, who was born in Berlin in 1978, impress with their color intensity, energy and rhythm. Awe combines colors and shapes with extraordinary ease and creates a moment of freedom and joie de vivre for the viewer.
A highlight of the exhibition is the six-meter-long canvas catch my vibe, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 160 x 600 cm, which impressively not only shows Christian Awe's painterly virtuosity, but also reminds of his monumental works in public space.
Influenced by his teachers Georg Baselitz and Daniel Richter, Christian Awe’s painting is also influenced by a wide range of artistic styles. Traces of American Abstract Expressionism, tachistic or informal color structures flow into his compositions. Abstracted forms imply a special degree of movement, which literally pushes out of the picture and makes its surface tactile. Streams of color, powerful splashes and spontaneous gestures cover the layers below and form an exciting symbiosis in a dialogue of spontaneity, experiment and artistic calculation.
This style can be observed, for example, in evolution, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 260 x 220 cm. Different layers that appeal to the senses at first glance, but on closer inspection allow you to see and feel much more and always new, give Christian Awe's works their rhythm and spatial depth.
Whether on canvas or paper - Awe's complex works fascinate with their radiance and their finely nuanced vividness. Like the work spring, 2017, acrylic on canvas 200 x 160 cm, in which compositions of matt and glossy layers seem to allow drops to wet the painting surface and merge with airy, floating gestures. They unite to poetically pulsating worlds of color that touch the senses and carry us away into a world of colors and emotions.
Christian Awes' works of art are not only regularly presented in international museum exhibitions, but are also represented, for example, in the collection in the art space of the German Bundestag in Berlin and in the SPM Salsali Private Museum in Dubai.
