Biography

Under the title "Magic of Paper", the Samuelis Baumgarte Gallery presented an extensive show in 2012 with over 40 works from the last six years by the artist, who was born in Giessen in 1936. Her art, which has been recognized in numerous international exhibitions, combines aspects of conceptual art with those of concrete art and is also close to light art through the use of neon tubes.

The focus of "Magic of Paper" is on Lore Bert's works on paper, which are diverse in terms of motifs and design. At first glance, the large-format pictorial objects made of Japanese paper folded into small flowers with integrated gold leaf, such as "Golden Ornament" (2011, 160 x 160 cm), are particularly captivating, as they transcend the boundaries of two-dimensionality due to their tactile surface. In terms of motifs, the artist draws on universal graphic, linguistic and abstract signs, ornaments and symbols, which - like the high-quality Far Eastern paper from which they are made - function as carriers of the culture of their country of origin. Despite their large format, the pictorial objects made of Japanese paper radiate a magical lightness.

Lore Bert also creates three-dimensional paper objects that testify to an unobtrusive yet mysterious aesthetic. The small-format collages on wax paper such as "Komposition" (2007, 30 x 21 cm) and watercolors from the series "Komposition o.T." (2012, 20 x 20 cm) form a contrasting program. (2012, 20 x 20 cm), which fascinate the viewer with their purist formal language and surface design and thematically close the circle of the "magic of paper".

Lore Bert's work does indeed have its own dynamic of development. Her work is also historically anchored with the familiar references to idioms from religion and science.

For Lore Bert, it is a spiritual experience that takes on a metaphorical value when crossed with signs, numbers and historical symbols. As with her previous turns to history and art history, Lore Bert's work goes back to fundamental roots. Roots that can be described with the words "withdrawal" and "state" and that attempt to distinguish themselves from the miracle that is detached from reality.
