• Kim Simonsson

Biography

Kim Simonsson’s ceramic sculptures portray denizens of a parallel reality. Wearing voodoo masks, his feathered creatures are members of a tribe blessed with the power of flight. Simonsson electrostatically transfers nylon fiber to the surface of the sculptures, forming a layer resembling moss. This and the handcrafted effect adds new dynamism to the customarily smooth, glazed surface of Simonsson’s sculptures.

Kim Simonsson graduated as a ceramics major from the University of Arts and Design in 2000. Since then he has renewed the traditions of ceramic art by combining the vocabulary of classic marble sculpting with computer games and other elements of popular culture. Named Finland’s Young Artist in 2004, Simonsson is internationally active. His works are found in international collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art.

Kim Simonsson opens up an intense private-mythological world. His sculptures in glazed stoneware operate on both sides of the threshold of consciousness. These physical objects have a strangely timeless quality, as if they were quiet representatives of a detailed but unknown borderland.
