Biography

Born March 13, 1930 in Wendorf

The German painter and object artist Günther Uecker became known mainly for his relief-like nail paintings. Some of his works can be classified as kinetic art. He is a member of the artist group ZERO, founded by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene.

From 1949 to 1953 Günther Uecker studied painting first in Wismar and then at the Art Academy in Berlin-Weißensee. In 1953 he went to West Berlin, where he became familiar with abstract art. Between 1955 and 1957 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Otto Pankok, who strongly influenced him. During this time he created his first nail paintings, with which he later became known. In 1961 he became a member of the artist group ZERO. In 1970 Uecker presented his works at the Venice Biennale. This was followed by several stays abroad. More and more often he dealt with political issues in his art. Between 1974 and 1995 he was a professor at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. Uecker now lives alternately in Düsseldorf and St. Gallen.
In addition to his well-known nail paintings, Günther Uecker is also active as a sculptor, he created light installations, kinetic art and stage sets. His noisy installation Terrororchesters, which was shown at the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, caused a sensation.

Holding the bundled nails in the left hand, with the right hand holding a hammer, select a nail, set it and hammer it in. Tense and relax...
