Imi Knoebel, born in Dessau in 1940, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy - in the class of Joseph Beuys - and gave Minimal Art great international dimensions: Not only did he create monumental works such as the stained glass windows of Reims Cathedral, he also used his art to eliminate social grievances and achieve political goals, supporting children's rights, the Polish trade union Solidarność and Franco-German reconciliation. His works, exhibited worldwide, are consistently non-objective, full of determination and conciseness. It is the “non-painted” that creates sensations in the viewer and sets no limits to the imagination.
Susanne Zuehlke, born in 1962, studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe under Professors Harry Kögler and Helmut Dorner and is one of the most important German artists of her time. In Zuehlke's work, color and light become the formative force of expansive paintings. In seemingly abstract spatial stagings, she sets clear color values in exciting contrasts. Her high self-image unconsciously testifies to a unique understanding of color. In this way, Zuehlke creates her own orders with their own rules and laws, which operate with opposites such as beginning and end, fullness and emptiness.
