About the exhibition
From Saturday, April 27, 2024, the Samuelis Baumgarte Galerie, Bielefeld, presents the extensive exhibition "Atomic Suite. Winterreise. Fantasy" by Berlin artist Hans-Jörg Mayer (born 1955) with over 30 works on canvas and paper. These include works from the artist's latest series.
The vernissage of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 18:30 as part of the Bielefelder Nachtansichten. At 19:00, artist talk with Hans-Jörg Mayer. The artist will be present.
Hans-Jörg Mayer's works are figurative concept paintings and luminous pop-trash phenomena. They are hybrid forms in constant metamorphosis. Painterly aesthetics that open up and at the same time block interpretation. Doubting, grueling, a little obscene.
Hans-Jörg Mayer sees painting as a process: what do you paint and what do you not paint, how do you think and how do you not think, how do you get to the heart of painting? Figuratively, conceptually and emotionally.
Mayer's paintings are congenial interlocutors in this aesthetic discourse. Mayer lives artistically for the figures and events that unfold their potential in his paintings. The fact that these figures do not usually represent real people, but are composed from models, enhances their effect, as does the allegorical and fantastical nature of the scenes depicted: they are not the destination of the shared journey, but the starting point. If you look at Mayer's paintings in this series, you can see the metamorphoses, the hybrid nature of his pictures - cool, enigmatic and ambivalent.
