Yaacov Agam
Biography
Yaacov Agam (Israeli, born 1928) is a well-known visual artist. He was born in Mandate Palestine and lived there until 1949, the year after the state of Israel was founded. In Palestine, Agam studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. After moving to Switzerland in 1949, he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts and at the University of Zurich. He moved to Paris in 1951.
Agam is considered an important representative of kinetic art. Kinetic works of art are characterized by moving elements that achieve visual effects through the forces of nature, motors or human intervention. Agam's sculpture Peaceful Communication with the World is a variant of classic kinetic art, with children of different heights perceiving the sculpture differently. In his work Fire and Water Fountain, he uses mechanically driven elements for the visual effects.
Agam works almost exclusively with sculptures, many of which are very large. One of his best-known works is Hanukkah Menorah, which can be seen in New York City. It is 9.75 meters high and depicts a menorah. His sculptures can be seen in many cities around the world, including Jerusalem, Paris, Tel Aviv, Los Angeles and the Bahamas. Exhibitions and retrospectives of his work have been held in galleries and museums. Retrospectives have been shown at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Solo exhibitions have been held at the Marlborough-Gerson Gallery in New York, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico and the Jewish Museum in New York, among others. In addition to his work as an artist, Agam lectures at universities and specialist congresses on the subject of art education. In 1968, he was a guest lecturer at Harvard University for a course on visual communication. Some of his pedagogical approaches to improving children's cognitive and creative abilities have been implemented in Israel. The artist lives and works in Paris.
My aim is to show visibility as a possibility in a state of perpetual becoming.
