Robert Motherwell 2 Über Robert Motherwell Obgleich seine Werke zu seinen Leb- zeiten in allen bedeutenden euro- päischen Museen vorgestellt worden sind, ist Robert Motherwell (1915 – 1991) in Deutschland sehr viel weniger bekannt als etwa Jackson Pollock, mit dem er 1943 seine erste nennenswerte Ausstellung bestritt: Peggy Guggen- heim hatte die beiden eingeladen, in ihrer Galerie Art of this Century aus- zustellen. Zusammen mit Max Ernst, Schwitters, Picasso, Braque, Miró, Arp und de Chirico sollten die jun- gen, total unbekannten Amerikaner Collagen zeigen. Sie hatten zwar gar keine, mussten sie also erst herstellen. Sie taten das aber so eindrucksvoll, dass die Ausstellung ein Erfolg wurde und Motherwell im folgenden Jahr in dieser musealen Galerie seine erste Einzelausstellung bekam. Während Pollock nie wieder Collagen herstellte, nahm Motherwell diese schnelle Art, lebensfrohe Bilder zu fabrizieren, mit Begeisterung auf und schuf damit ein Gegengewicht zu seinen schweren schwarzen Gemälden. allem der Maler der Elegien, end- losen Variationen eines Motivs aus schwarzen Balken und Ovalen, in denen ursprünglich die Trauer um die Opfer des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs ihren Ausdruck fand. In dieser Aus- stellung gibt es dafür keine Beispiele, sie müssen aber erwähnt werden, weil sie den Künstler charakterisieren. Den Künstler, der, obgleich der jüngste unter den Abstrakten Expressionisten, allgemein als ihr Theoretiker an- erkannt wurde. um 1940: Es tummelten sich dort viele junge Künstler, doch sie hatten kein gemeinsames Programm, es gab keine New Yorker Schule, die ein Gegen- gewicht zu der die moderne Malerei dominierenden Pariser Schule hätte bilden können. Bestimmend war hier André Breton, der über die Gruppe der Surrealisten herrschte. Mit ihm zusammen und teilweise mit Hilfe der wohlhabenden Amerikanerin Peggy Guggenheim befanden sie sich nun im New Yorker Exil. Geboren an der amerikanischen Westküste, aufgewachsen in Kalifornien, kam er 1940 zur Fortsetzung seiner Studien der Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte an die Harvard Universität im Osten und schließlich nach New York an die Columbia, wo er durch Meyer Schapi- ro nicht nur die europäischen Künstler um Breton kennenlernte, sondern sich von diesem Lehrer auch in seinem Wunsch bestärkt fühlte, von der Kunstwissenschaft in die künstlerische Praxis zu wechseln. Als Maler war Motherwell also ein hoch gebildeter Autodidakt. Ein Jahr lang (1938-39) hatte er in Paris an seiner Disserta- tion über die Tagebücher von Dela- croix gearbeitet. Dabei konnte er sich bereits mit dem Surrealismus und dessen Theorie des Automatismus vertraut machen. 1941, auf einer Reise nach Mexiko mit dem Maler Matta Echaurren, begann er, gewissermaßen im Selbstversuch, erste automatische Zeichnungen anzufertigen. Rasch wurde ihm klar, dass das Ziel auf diesem Weg ein anderes sein müsste als das vom Dogma der Surrealisten vorgegebene. Nicht ein als figürlich Erkennbares sollte der automatische Umgang mit Stift oder Pinsel hervor- bringen, sondern die jeweils eigene Handschrift des Künstlers: abstrakt und jeglicher Interpretation offen. Er definierte den Abstrakten Expressio- nismus als eine Gestik, eine Aktion, mit der der Maler sich selbst erfindet. Ölfarbe, zumal wenn sie sehr dick aufgetragen wird, braucht Zeit zum Trocknen. Collagen hin- gegen sind fertig, sobald die Ele- mente an der richtigen Stelle sitzen. Motherwell arbeitete meist auf dem Fußboden. Fotos zeigen ihn kniend, umgeben von einer Menge an farbi- gem Material, Klebstoffflaschen etc.. Immer wieder sieht man ihn mit einer Zigarette, und so ist es nicht verwun- derlich, dass das rote, blaue, grüne

Diese ephemeren Objekte benutzte der Künstler, ähnlich wie andere Fundstücke aus dem täglichen Leben, gleichsam spielerisch. Er sagte, das sei der Teil seiner Kunst, der nichts mit seinem Innersten zu tun habe. Wenn die bekannte deut- sche Roth-Händle-Packung neben dem originalen Rot in derselben Form, jedoch in anderen Farben auftaucht, muss es sich um eine technische Vervielfältigung handeln. Neben der hier verwendeten Aquatinta erlernte und benutzte Motherwell mit größtem Vergnügen alle möglichen Verfahren, um Grafik zu produzieren oder sie in Auflagen zu reproduzieren. däre Tatyana Grosman, in deren Werk- statt auf Long Island viele Künstler die schönsten grafischen Arbeiten herstellten. So entstanden, wie auch in seiner Malerei, von einzelnen Motiven ganze Serien, deren Variationen sich in dieser Ausstellung gut studieren lassen. So zum Beispiel die Berggruen Serie, wahrscheinlich für eine Ausstel- lung in der renommierten Pariser Ga- lerie Berggruen entworfen: Zwei oder drei streng geometrische, verschieden- farbige Folien bilden den Hintergrund, Dabei half ihm die legen- auf dem als Kontrast ein formloses schwarzes Element steht. Die einzel- nen Blätter tragen keine Titel, genauso wenig wie die der Basque Suite, einer Folge von Farbsiebdrucken. Im Allgemeinen bemüh- te sich Motherwell, seinen Werken Titel zu geben, mit deren Hilfe beim Betrachter die Vorstellung von einer Situation, einer Stimmung oder Aktion geweckt werden konnte. Beispiele hierfür sind die vorwiegend schwarzen Blätter: Black with no Way out, Dance und Monster. Oder die roten: The Red Queen, Red Sea. Wenn jedoch Calli- graphic Study oder Gesture zum Titel eines Blatts wird, ist nur der Arbeits- vorgang benannt, und man kann sicher sein, dass sich hinter dem einen Exempel viele weitere Freihandstudien verbergen. eine Vorliebe für Papiere. Er kaufte sie stapelweise und machte immer neue Versuche mit Stiften, Pinseln und Bürsten, mit lockerer Hand oder har- tem Strich, mit sauberem Schnitt oder flockigem Riss. Robert Motherwell 4 On Robert Motherwell Although during his lifetime his works were presented in all the major European museums, Robert Mother- well (1915-1991) is not near as well- known as Jackson Pollock, together with whom in 1943 he contested his first noteworthy exhibition: Peggy Guggen heim had invited them both to a show in her gallery, Art of This Century. Together with Max Ernst, Schwitters, Picasso, Braque, Miró, Arp and de Chirico the young, totally unknown Americans were asked to contribute their own collages. They had none, so they had to first make some. Which they did, and did so impressively that the occasion was a success, and Motherwell was invited back the following year to do his first ever solo show. While Pollock never again produced collages, Motherwell enthusiastically took up this rapid way of fabricating joyous pictures, which became a counterbalance to his weighty black paintings. Above all, Motherwell is known as the painter of the Elegies, endless variations on a motif of black rectangular beams and ovals, origi- nally emblems that mourn the victims of the Spanish Civil War. In the pre- sent exhibition there are no examples of this kind, but they need mentioning here because they so characterize the artist. This artist who, although the youngest among the Abstract Expres- sionists, was generally considered to be their theoretician. The situation in New York around 1940: The city was bustling with a bevy of young artists, but they shared no program in common. There was no New York School that could have acted as a counterweight to the dominating modern painting of the École de Paris. The determining factor there was André Breton who ruled over the group of Surrealists. Together with him and partly the assistance of the well-to-do American, Peggy Gug- genheim, they now found themselves exiled in New York. The art historian, Meyer Schapiro, who taught at Co- lumbia University, became a mediator between the Parisians and the New Yorkers. Among the latter was Robert Motherwell. Born on the west coast, grew up in California, he arrived in 1940 to continue his studies of philosophy and art history at Harvard and then at Columbia in New York. Through Meyer Schapiro he not only met the European artists around Breton, he also felt himself reinforced by this teacher in his wish to switch from the scholarship of art to the practice of art. Motherwell, highly educated, was an autodidact as a painter. He had spent one year (1938-39) in Paris writing his dis- sertation on Delacroix’s diaries. This allowed him while there to become familiar with Surrealism and its theory of automatism. In 1941 on a trip to Me- xico with the painter Matta Echaurren, he began to make his first automatic drawings in, so to speak, a self-assig- ned trial. It quickly became clear to him that the goal here was different from the dogma that the Surrealists prescribed. Nothing figurative should be recognizable via an automatic interaction with pencil or brush ex- cept for the personal handwriting of the artist himself: abstract and open to any interpretation. He defined Ab- stract Expressionism as gesture, action, by which the painter invents himself. Oil paint, especially when it is applied very thickly, needs time to dry. Collages, in contrast, are finished as soon as the individual elements are placed in the right spot. Motherwell mostly worked on the floor. Photos show him kneeling, surrounded by heaps of colored material, bottles of glue, etc. Time after time he can be seen with a cigarette. So it is not at all strange that the red, blue, green and olive-colored paper from cigarette packages of every possible brand take up a central place. The artist used these ephemeral objects, similar to other daily-life finds, quasi playfully. He said they were a part of his art that had nothing to do with his innermost being. When the familiar German Roth-Händle package appears along- side the original red in the same form

Along with the aquatint printing that Motherwell learned to use here, he took great pleasure in learning and utilizing all possible methods to produce prints or to reproduce them in editions. He was helped by the legendary Tatyana Grosman, in whose workshop on Long Island many artists fabricated their lovely graphic works. She had begun in 1957 to make lithographs with a couple of stones, but soon after expanded the studio to include aquatints and etchings. And Motherwell experimented there just as passionately and success- fully. Thus, as in his painting, whole series came about from single motifs, variations on which you can study in this exhibition. So, for example, the Berggruen series, probably designed for an exhibition in the renowned Paris Galerie Berggruen: two or three strictly geometric, translucent papers in different colors shape the back- ground, against which as contrast, a formless black element emerges. The single sheets of paper bear no title, nor does the Basque Suite, a series of colored silkscreen prints. In general, Motherwell When however Calligra- makes an effort to give his works titles, which can help arouse the viewer to the idea of a situation, a mood, an action. Examples are the dominantly black prints: Black with No Way Out, Dance and Monster. In his paintings he was partial to a melancholy black. He was a tall man and had experience with large-scale canvases. But in the small formats of his graphic work he becomes an amiable colorist, who loved the ochre of the California hills of his youth and the red color of blood just as much as the blue of the ocean whose expanse he looked out on from his house in Provincetown. Er zählt zu den herausragenden Vertretern des Action Painting und des Abstrakten Expressio- nismus. 1935 beginnt er ein Studium der Philosophie an der Stanford University, Kalifornien, das er 1937 mit einem BA abschließt. Hier lernt er den Philoso- phen Alfred North Whitehead kennen und kommt durch ihn in Kontakt mit den Werken der französischen symbo- listischen Dichter. Dadurch inspiriert eröffnen sich Motherwell die Möglich- keiten der Abstraktion sowohl in der Kunst als auch in der Literatur. Während einer monatelangen Europareise in 1938 lernt er den europäischen Modernismus kennen und lieben. Zurück in Amerika beginnt Motherwell 1940 ein Studium der Kunstgeschichte an der Columbia University in New York. Dort begegnet er den wichtigsten Vertretern des Abstrak- ten Expressionismus. Der Kunsthistoriker Meyer Schapiro, der an der Columbia unterrichtet, beeinflusst Motherwell stark und führt ihn in die Gruppe der europäi- schen Surrealisten ein, die sich zu der Zeit in New York befinden. Besonders das Konzept der Écriture automatique beein- druckt Motherwell. Der Grundgedanke, dass Kunst durch das Unterbewusstsein des Künstlers entsteht, indem man der Hand freien Lauf lässt, ohne die Bewe- gungen bewusst zu steuern, sozusagen automatisch entstehen lässt, wird zum zentralen Grundsatz in seinem Werk. zusammen mit dem Surrealisten Roberto Matta auf eine Reise nach Mexiko. Das dort entstandene ‚Mexican Sketchbook‘ zeigt deutlich den Einfluss des Sur- realismus. Mit der Teilnahme an einer Ausstellung von Collagen europäischer Modernisten auf Einladung durch Peggy Guggenheim, beginnt 1943 die steile Karriere Motherwells. Collagen sind von da an fester Bestandteil seines Oeuvres. Darauf folgt eine Einzelausstellung in Guggenheims ‚Art of This Century-Gal- lery‘ in New York sowie ein Vertrag mit dem Kunsthändler Sam Kootz in 1945. Parallel dazu beginnt Mot- herwell in den 1940er Jahren seine Karriere als Lehrer, Schriftsteller und 1941 begibt sich Motherwell 56 Herausgeber. Während der folgenden zwei Jahrzehnte unterrichtet er am Black Mountain College in North Carolina, und gründet gemeinsam mit Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman und William Baziotes die Kunstschule ‚Subjects of the Artists‘ in Greenwich Village, New York. Von 1950 – 1958 lehrt Motherwell ebenfalls am Hunter College, New York. In seinen Collagen verwendet Mother- well nun auch Alltagsprodukte wie z.B. Zigarettenpackungen. Seine dritte große Werkgruppe ‚Opens‘ beginnt er 1968 nach seiner Scheidung von Helen Frankenthaler. Wie auch in seinen früheren Serien bauen die Arbeiten der ‚Opens‘-Serie auf einem relativ einfachen formalen Konstrukt auf – in diesem Fall eine zwei- bis dreiseitige gradlinige Box auf einer überwiegend monochromen Fläche. Hier findet Motherwell nahezu unbegrenzt Raum für Variationen und Extrapolationen. Ende kontinuierlich produktiv. Er widmet sich neben der Malerei weiterhin den Drucktechniken und dem Lektorieren. He is one of the most famous protagonist of Action Painting and Abstract Expressionism. In 1935, he begins his studies at Stanford Universi- ty, where he earned a BA in philosophy in 1937. There he encounters the philo- sopher Alfred North Whitehead and the work of French symbolist poets. These twin inspirations help to open Motherwell‘s mind to the possibilities of abstraction in writing and art. trip which he embarked upon in 1938, he encounters and fells in love with European modernism. He was deeply impressed by their notion of automatism - the idea that art might be a manifestation of the artist‘s subcon- scious - and it would become a central tenet of his work. Motherwell‘s first known works were composed during a 1941 trip to Mexico with the Surrealist pain- ter Roberto Matta. These eleven pen and ink drawings, collectively called the „Mexican Sketchbook,“ show the influence of Surrealism. Motherwell‘s career then received a jump-start in 1943 when Peggy Guggenheim offers him the opportunity to participate in a show of collages by several Euro- pean modernists. He takes to collage immediately and would continue to utilize the technique throughout his career. The show is followed by a solo exhibition at Peggy Guggenheim‘s Art of This Century Gallery in New York in 1944, and a contract with the dealer Sam Kootz in 1945. also begins parallel careers in teaching, editing and writing. Over the next two decades, he teaches at Black Mountain In the 1940s, Motherwell College in North Carolina; together with Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Willian Baziotes he founds an art school, Subjects of the Artist, in New York‘s Greenwich Village; and he also taught at Hunter College. He writes for the Surrealist publication VVV in 1941, and later edits the extremely influential Documents of Modern Art series, the publication Possibilities, and The Dada Painters and Poets anthology. The Elegies to the Spanish Republic series - a group of over 140 works for which the artist is perhaps best known - begins in 1948. Compo- sed between 1953 and 1957, the artist‘s second major group of work is called the Je t‘aime series. They maintain the same dialogue between the strict- ly formal compositions of European modernism and the more spontaneous, emotionally expressive methods of the Abstract Expressionist movement. In 1961, Motherwell begins to reinvent his collages as limited edi- tions of lithographic prints. He would become the only artist in the first generation of Abstract Expressionists to utilize printmaking as a major part of his artistic practice. Motherwell‘s collages from this period also started to incorporate the detritus (cigarette wrappers, etc.) of his daily life. He starts his third major series, the Opens, in 1968, after the dissolution of his marriage to the artist Helen Frankenthaler. As with his earlier series, these works are organized around a relatively simple formal construct - in this case, a two or three-sided rectili- near box on a mostly monochromatic field - in which Motherwell would find almost infinite room for variation and extrapolation. to work productively throughout the following years.
