Tony Cragg

Tony Cragg - „Pair“, 2023, Bronze, 142 x 60 x 60 cm

Tony Cragg, who has lived in Wuppertal since 1977, is one of the most internationally renowned sculptors of his generation. His expansive sculptures have a high recognition value. The sensually shaped sculptures invite viewers to vary their point of view and perspective. Tony Cragg is also very familiar with the desire and impulse of the recipients of his art to touch it. The sculptor has long been interested in the feelings and meanings created through the use of different materials. His sculptures are characterized by an enormous variety of forms and materials, which can be seen and, for once, felt in the show of around 30 works at the Düsseldorf Kunstpalast.

Exhibition at the Düsseldorf Kunstpalast - until May 26, 2024

Sculptures should be touched. However, this "touching" is rarely possible in museums for conservation reasons. Together with the English sculptor Tony Cragg (*1949), the Kunstpalast is presenting an exhibition that focuses on the tactile stimuli of his sculptures. In addition to the sculptural and material qualities, the moving forms come to the forefront of perception and enable an intensive physical encounter with the works. It is the first extensive presentation in a museum that explicitly invites visitors to feel all the sculptures.

Exploring the material world and uncovering its possibilities is a central concern of Tony Cragg. He is interested in the combination of material and meaning, which is illustrated in the "Please touch!" exhibition. The show also offers a look over the sculptor's shoulder. In the last exhibition room is Tony Cragg's reconstructed studio - the place where his artistic process and working methods can be understood.
